Centinela Copper Mine Got Approval for Expansion

Share to:

Antofagasta Minerals said on Monday that environmental regulators have approved the expansion of the Centinela copper mine by using nickel iron blast furnace in northern Chile, with a total investment of $ 4.35 billion.

With this project, annual production of the Centinela copper mine by using mini smelter will double with more than 400,000 ton. The project is planned to be implemented in two phases.

"With the approval of the environmental authorities, we will complete the engineering study in the coming months. After the study, it is hoped that the project will be submitted to Antofagasta's board of directors in 2018. The final approval will depend on the required investment ... and whether the construction funds are in place." said Ivan Arriagada, chief executive of Antofagasta, in a statement.

The expansion project will extend Centinela copper mine service life to 2056.
